September 27, 2010
The month is almost over. That means 9 months of school left. Wow!
What a great week!! We are really getting into a good routine and making giant strides. I am so impressed with the quality of work we are producing now!
*When you come to pick up your child early, please remember that they must be checked out at the office. Thanks!
*Absent - Please make sure that your child completes the worksheets that they miss when they are absent. They don't have to be returned the very next day, but whenever they are finished.
*V.I.P. - Thank you so much for remembering to write out the clues for your child to read. They are doing an awesome job. They love it.
*Fire Safety - Fire Safety is in the 1st week of October. Fireman, Stan Colenutt is coming to make a presentation for all Grade 1 students. He has been doing this for a few years and gives a fantastic presentation. He is coming on Wednesday, September 29, so your child won't want to miss that day. Practice a family fire escape at home. It is very important for you and your children to know what to doand where to meet in case of an emergency.
*Snacks - Your child really appreciates and enjoys their recess snack. I know some of you may really question if it is necessary. If you eat breakfast around 7:30 a.m., your child goes without food for about 3 hours. They really are hungry for a small snack at recess and it really does help them make it to lunch time. Thanks for your cooperation with this. Sometimes your child eats both of their snacks on Friday at recess time. I'm trying to remind them to only eat one and save the other for Snack Time! SO many things to remember!
*Home Reading - We will be reading Sam and the Sap on Monday and Tuesday.
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday we will be reading A Tap and a Pat. Please practice reading the stories every night. Read the sentences backwards if the stories are easy for your child. When you listen to your child read, please be very patient with them when they don't remember a word that you may have told them 50 - 100 times. Just very nicely tell them what the word is. I know this is sometimes hard to do. Remember how you would feel if someone corrected you all day long at work. Also, practice reading the vocabulary words and sight words. Do not read them in the same order all the time. Grade 1 students are very good at memorizing things in a certain order.
*Spelling Test - I'm so proud of my class and the great job they are doing with spelling the words. I do not give the spelling words in the same order that they appear on the sheet. I do not have the students correct the words at school. I like you to go over them at home so that you can see what they missed. Please remember to celebrate the good things that they do. They really are doing the very best they can do and will not always get them all right. They will be so excited if you make positive comments about any of their work. Thanks!!
*Late - Thank you for trying to be to school on time!
*Practice tying shoes laces and zipping up zippers.
*Library Books - Students check out books on Wednesday and Friday. I wish we were scheduled for more time in the library. Hopefully, you have a library card for the Public Library, so that you can check out books whenever you want to.
*Agendas - Thank you for signing the agenda every night. I appreciate your comments and for letting me know of appointments, etc.
*Chirp, Chickadee, Owl forms - Please check no in the box and sign your name and return. Our class can earn classroom rewards.
*Highlights form - This will be coming in about a week. Please check no in the box and sign your name so we can earn some more classroom rewards. Thanks!
*Blog - Please read weekly and hope you are enjoying the pictures. Cute class! Commenting on the blog. Click where it says comment. Type in comment. Underneath where it says select a profile, click on anonymous. Then you can type in your name, if you want to. If you are still having problems, let me know.
*School monthly newsletter from Mr. Hogg - raymondelementary.com.
*If you don't have access to the internet, please let me know!
*Remember to call me or write in your child's agenda about any concerns or questions that you have.
*Weather is looking great for next week.
Have a wonderful week and "Enjoy Your Crew"!

Awesome Weekend! I didn't get home until around 12:15 a.m. this morning.
Beautiful wedding! All my kids and grandchildren were there. I'm hoping our family picture turned out. I wish I lived closer to my grandkids. Three months until I see them all again.
Now back to my other world! I missed my class and wondered what they were doing!
*Late Policy - Thanks for trying to have your child on time. Remember your child has to go to the office to sign a late slip. After so many times of being late, Mr. Hogg calls.
*Running Shoes - Still a few students without extra shoes! Remember to practice tying shoe laces and zippers.
*Red Pencils - 2 red pencils!
*School Pictures - September 21
*Pizza Day - I'm pretty sure the students loved their pizzas and being able to eat together as a class. I'm looking forward to the next pizza day in October so that I can enjoy it with them.
*Friends - Keep reminding your child about how important it is to go home first, and then make arrangements to play with friends.
*If you attended Meet the Teacher Night, I want to thank you for making the special effort to come! Hope you won a book or the free school fees!
*Character Education for September is RESPECT!
*Home Reading - Thanks for all of your help! You are awesome! It is so nice to have parents that support their children and me!
*V.I.P. - Thanks for remembering. They are so excited to get up and give their clues!
*Library Books - Please try to return library books on time. Students are allowed to have books for 1 week.
*Please read my blog! I'm trying to find out why you can't comment on it. This is a whole new experience for me and I'm learning so much. Thanks for being so patient with me. Sometimes it is hard to teach "old dogs" new tricks.
*Snacks - I'm so impressed with the way you remember to send snacks for your child at recesses and Snack Day on Friday.
*Sight Words - Look for the sheet and cut them into strips and put on the ring I sent last week. Kids seem to like to practice words on a ring for some reason. Scrambled up the words so that they aren't always in the same order.
*If you have any concerns about your child at school, please let me know!
*Autobiography and Celebration Sheet- Thank you so very much for sending them.
*Kleenex - Still a few students who haven't sent 2 boxes. It is amazing how fast we go through a box, especially since we have students who have caught a cold already.

Successful Week! I am very impressed with what our class accomplished.
*Spelling Test - WOW!! Awesome results! What a way to start off the year. Next Spelling Test will be on Monday, September 20, because I will be in Washington attending my son's wedding. I want to give the test and celebrate with the students.
*Red Pencil - Everyone needs 2 red pencils. If you haven't sent them, the Raymond Pharmacy has them.
*Shoe laces & zippers - HELP!! - Please practice helping your child with these skills. It would help out immensely.
*School pictures - Please remember to check off the color of the background. Return sheets by Wednesday, September 15.
*Autobiography and Family Celebration Sheet - Thanks for filling out the information and sending it back. If you haven't sent it yet, please send as soon as possible. Thanks!
*Character Education for September is RESPECT! We will be talking about respect at school and if you catch your child showing respect, compliment them.
*Friends - Some of the students in my class our trying to make arrangements to go to their friend's house on their own. Please help reinforce the importance of going home first, and then making plans! Unless you send me a note saying they have permission to go home with a friend that has been prearrange, they won't be allowed to go. Thanks for your help.
*We will be walking & running for the next couple of weeks as a class. We have to report to the office on how many miles we accomplish! This will be a challenge and lots of fun, especially since I have to do it with the kids!
*Meet the Teacher Night - Remember, I will be attending my son's wedding, but if you come, you have a chance to win free school fees and books!
*Pizza Day - I am sad that I will miss the 1st Pizza Day with the kids but they are going to love it. Remember to wear red/white if possible.
*Late Policy - Starting Monday, September 13, I have to send all late students to the office to sign a late slip. This happens at 8:30 a.m. and 12:49 p.m. This is hard for me to do, but it is school policy.
*Running Shoes - Just a few students who don't have extra runners. There are lots of muddy areas on the playground and students have to take off their muddy shoes.
*Absent - Thanks for letting me know in advance if your child is going to be absent and thanks for phoning the office when your child is sick.
*Breakfast was awesome! No one complained about being hungry before recess. It smelled so good down the hallways.
*Home Reading - Thanks for caring about your child's education. It makes a great difference when you read consistently. I know every once in awhile, something comes up that interferes, but keep up the great work! Remember to make reading fun. If your child doesn't know a word, just say it for them. I know this is sometimes hard to do, especially when you have repeated the word for your child 50 times or more. You are reading for fun and if you want them to be willing to read with you, you have to make it a happy, no fear situation.
*Sight Words - I have put the 5 sight words on a ring. Practice reading them and also spelling them. Next week, I will send home a sheet with the words, but you will need to cut them and put them on the ring.
*V.I.P. - The students are loving this opportunity to get up in the front of the class. Thanks for writing out their clues!
*Snacks - Once again, thanks for sending recess snacks and 2 snacks on Friday.
*Library Books - I know some of the books are too hard for your child right now, but they are enjoying checking out their own books. Mrs. Susan Peterson is the librarian.
*Printing - We are continuing to work on correct formation. We are improving. Hope you have noticed so that you can celebrate with your child.
*Allergies - No one has reported any allergies to me!
Well, it is going to be a short week for me at school. Hope all goes well while I'm gone. Mrs. Vidal, my educational assistant, will help take great care of your kids. She know my routine, really well. Mrs. Kim McKay is substituting for me. I know she will do a wonderful job.
*Please let me know in your child's agenda, if you read the blog at least every Monday. Sometimes, if something important comes up in the middle of the week, I'll add new information or your child will write it in their agenda. Agendas are a great way to communcate.
*My sub will be keeping all work sheets at school, so that I can see how they did while I was gone. Your child's book bag should be pretty empty for 3 days!!
Have a great week! My class is the best!!

Sept. 6 - 10
Hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend! It went way too fast!!
*We made it through one week of school. Every day got better and better! It is hard for everyone to adjust to going to bed earlier, getting up earlier in the morning, sitting all day, and having to work all day! Thank you for all of your help and for the snacks to help us do this.
*We enjoyed going swimming last week. Now it won't happen until next May or June.
*Late Policy - All students who are late will be sent to the office to sign a late slip and tell the office why they are late. This happens at 8:30 a.m. and 12:49 p.m.
*Pizza Day - Money and order needs to be handed in by Thursday, September 9 in the morning. Wear red/white on Pizza Day. It is fun to have everyone eating together. If you don't want to order, your child can bring a lunch and eat with us.
We are excited about Pizza Day!
*Running Shoes - Thanks for trying to have an extra pair at school.
*Absent - Remember, if you know in advance of an appointment, etc. please jot it down in your child's agenda. Thanks! Phone the office if your child is sick! This makes their job easier. If you need to take your child for an appointment or other reasons, you have to check them out at the office.
*Home Reading - Great job last week! Did you notice the sheet with the story typed without pictures and the vocabulary. Practice reading the sheet and the story booklet. If your child can read the story fluently, have them try reading the story backwards. It is harder to memorize the story if you do this. Next week, I will be sending the 5 sight words on a ring. From then on, I will send the sheet with the 5 words and you can cut them and use the ring. The words that have a star by them, are "family words". (at - fat, bat, cat, mat, rat, sat, etc.) We use yellow for the "family words". The words that have a "stop sign" by them, are sight words. Most of them need to be memorized. We use red for the "sight words". Remember, reading 15 minutes every night consistently is more beneficial than trying to catch up.
*Spelling Test - Our 1st spelling test will be Friday, September 10. I will sound out the words very slowly. I want the 1st test to be a success for each child. Thanks for practicing the words at home. We practice every day on our white boards with our dry erase marker and finger glove. (Please send a finger glove as soon as possible.) Thanks!
*V.I.P. - Starts this week. Remember to write down 3 clues for your child. Practice reading it at home. I will help your child if they forget. Then the students have 3 guesses and we ask 3 questions. They love it. Only send 1 item to share.
*Snack - Wow! Thanks for sending a snack for morning recess! It really helps your child make it to lunch time. Also thanks for sending 2 snacks on Friday!
*Comet Youth Basketball Registration - Thursday, September 9 @ 4:30 - 6:00 p.m.
*Agenda- Thanks for signing agenda every night!
*Grocery Bags - Thanks for sending. We used alot of them last week for our wet swimming suits and towels.
*Printing - We are working really hard to improve our printing by forming the letters properly and trying to start from the top and then down to the bottom. We don't print alot of letters. I walk the students through each letter and we pay close attention to the size and the correct formation.
*Room Mother - Our Room Mother is Leslie Heggie, Jane's mom. Thanks Leslie!
*Justin Patrick has a new baby brother. His name is Logan and I think he weighed 5 lbs. 3 oz. Congratulations to his family.
*My youngest son is getting married September 18. I will be heading to Spokane, Washington after school Tuesday, September 14. I won't be at school Wednesday, September 15, Thursday, September 16, and Friday, September 17. It is very hard for me to miss school, especially in September. BUT, I wouldn't miss my son's wedding for anything.
*Meet the Teacher Night - Thursday, September 16 @ 6:00 p.m. I won't be there because I will be in Spokane getting ready for my son's wedding. There will be draws for free school fees, and for books. You have to be in attendance to win.
*Head Lice - This can happen to any of us at anytime. Please check your child for the next couple of weeks.

*Puzzlemania & Highlights - Thanks for signing and checking off "no", so that we can earn classroom rewards. Keep sending in the forms.
*Early Morning Breakfast - Friday, September 10, from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. This year it is only for the students at R.E.S. We are trying to focus on eating a good healthy breakfast. We will be eating pancakes, fruit, and water.
*Autobiography and Family Celebration sheet - I am sending home an envelope with these. Please fill out and return to school by Friday, September 10 if possible.
We will color these sheets at school. These sheets go in your child's Gr. 1 book that we produce for you.
*Allergies - Please let me know if your child has any allergies or health problems.
*This is my second year at doing a blog. I am not very computer literate but I am willing to try and improve. Hang in there with me.
We are off to another great week!
